Complete In Jesus Part 2
Last week I stated that the truth that will be applied throughout this series is this:
We can be complete in Jesus whether we are married, single or divorced.
This truth though very simple is very hard for humanity to accept because we believe that God gave us marriage to make us complete. The main text of scripture that is used to support this lie is found in Genesis 2:18 were God said:
And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
We say that this text proves that God’s purpose for marriage was to make us complete because without it we would be doomed to live with the empty feeling of loneliness.
First of all I would like to point out that God did not say that it was not good for man to be lonely: He said it was not good for man to be alone. When God made Adam, he was not lonely because Adam was made in the image of God. That means that Adam had fellowship with God 24/7 because the Spirit of God dwelled in Him (see John 14:20-23): Adam was one with God and because of this union He was filled with God’s fullness and complete (see John 17:20-23 & Colossians 2:8-10).
So the question is this:
If Adam and Eve were complete when God made them what was God’s purpose for marriage?
We find the answer to this question in Genesis 1:27&28 where we are told:
1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
This tells us that God’s ultimate purpose for creating mankind was to spread His glory/ His image throughout the earth. Psalms 7:5 says:
7:5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; [let] thy glory [be] above all the earth. (Emphasis supplied).
In order to accomplish this purpose God created male (Adam) and female (Eve) in His image (v.27) and gave them the command to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it (v.28). However, it is important to point out the fact that God joined Adam (male) and Eve (female) in the holy institution of marriage to make it possible for His glory to be above all the earth (see Genesis 2:18-25). In other words, God gave mankind the institution of marriage to preserve and to perpetuate His image/glory in mankind: Therefore marriage was the vehicle that would make it possible for mankind to not only replenish (to fill) the earth but marriage also made also made it possible for mankind to subdue the earth and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth (see Genesis 1:28).
So the point is this:
God’s purpose for creating mankind in His image was and still is to spread His glory throughout the earth. To insure that this purpose would be fulfilled God gave mankind the institution of marriage.
Next week I am going to deal with how living for any other purpose than glorifying God weakens the institution of marriage. Once again I leave you with this portion of scripture to ponder and pray over:
4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love… 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. I John 4:7-8 & 15-16 (Emphasis supplied).
