Hebrews 4:3- 6 says:
4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. 4:5 And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. 4:6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: (Emphasis supplied).
We can see here that God’s rest is tied to the 7th day that God created after He had finished His work of creation (v.4). The 7th day was created by God as a constant reminder to mankind that He had already provided for their every need. Therefore, there was no need for them to depend on their works to survive but rather they were to walk by faith in His finished work. It was this faith walk that would allow them to always experience the rest that God entered into when He created the 7th day. As long as Adam and Eve walked by faith in God’s finished work the only work they would ever do was the work of faith. Hebrews 11:6 tells us what that work is. It says:
But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Emphasis supplied).
This lets us know that faith works. It also tells us what that work is: To diligently seek God. Therefore, when we walk by faith the only work we will do is the work of faith. In Matthew 6:24 Jesus tells us why it is the only work we can do. He said:
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Emphasis supplied).
Jesus tells us here that we either serve the God of heaven 24/7 or we serve the god of this world (mammon/money) 24/7: There is no middle ground. In verses 25-34 Jesus goes on to tell us how to serve God 24/7. However, for the sake of time and space I will only deal with verses 25, 32&33 which says:
6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 6:32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Emphasis supplied).
In theses verses Jesus gives us 3 spiritual principles that makes doing the work of faith 24/7 very practical. Those 3 spiritual principles are:
- Take no thought for your life.
- Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
- I will add all things to you.
Only those who walk by faith in God’s finished work will live by these 3 spiritual principles Jesus gave and only those who live by these 3 principles will enter God’s rest.
Next week we are going to take a deeper look into these 3 principle and what they have to do with the 7th day that God rested on, blessed and sanctified (Genesis 2:2&3). In the meantime continue to prayerfully read Hebrews 4:1-11.
