In Matthew 6:24-34 Jesus gives the 3 spiritual principles that we must live by in order to enter God’s rest. They are:
- Take no thought for your life (v.25&31).
- Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (v.33).
- I will add all things to you (v.33).
Before we can enter God’s rest we must learn to live by these 3 principles which I call: The principles of faith. I call them the principles of faith because of what we are told in Hebrews 11:6:
But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Emphasis supplied).
I will start with principle #3 because in order to believe that God will add all the things we desire to us we must first believe that He Is. That means we must believe that God is the great I AM: He is whatever we need, whenever we need it.
Those who believe that God is will not only live by the 3rd principle, they will also live by the 1st and 2nd principles of faith because those two principles tell us how to diligently seek God.
The problem is that most of us do not believe He Is, most of us believe that something or someone on this earth is. Therefore, when we pray we do not diligently seek God’s will, we diligently seek to get him to supply us with the someone or something on earth we believe is what we need to be complete. This is why we are told in Colossians 2:8-10:
2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: (Emphasis supplied}.
Faith believes that God is and that when they diligently seek Him He will satisfy the desires of their hearts.
Psalms 37:4-7 says:
37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 37:5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring [it] to pass. 37:6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. 37:7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (Emphasis supplied).
Those who live by the 3 principles of faith will diligently seek God 24/7 and depend on Him to supply all that they desire, both physically (v.4&5) and spiritually (v.6). As a result they will enter the rest that faith in Jesus brings (v.7).
Next week we are going to going to apply these 3 principles of faith to what we are told in Hebrews 4:3-11. In the meantime read Hebrews 4:3-11 daily and prayerfully ask God to help you understand His purpose for creating the 7th day and how it relates to entering His rest.
