4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. (Emphasis supplied).
This tells us that the 7th day Sabbath rest was created so that we would always live by faith in God’s finished work of creation. When Adam and Eve failed to keep the rest by lack of faith in God’s finished work of creation God became flesh (Jesus) and did the work of salvation/re-creation and spoke of the 7th day as a sign of His finished work in that as well. Exodus 20:12&20 says:
20:12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I [am] the LORD that sanctify them. 20:20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I [am] the LORD your God. (Emphasis supplied).
Therefore, the purpose of the 7th day Sabbath is to remind us that it is faith in Jesus’ finished work in both creation and re-creation/salvation that makes us holy and when the 7th day Sabbath is kept by faith it will keep mankind holy. This was true for Adam and Eve and it is also true for me and you.
However, God’s people had perverted the Sabbath by saying that it was man’s duty to keep it holy. This teaching takes the focus off of Jesus’ finished work of salvation/re-creation and focuses on man’s work to do something to save himself, which is to, keep the 7th day Sabbath holy.
This is why Jesus’ own people accused Him of breaking the Sabbath. It is because Jesus’ own did not understand the true purpose of the Sabbath that Jesus said:
2:27 …the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
In essence what Jesus is saying here is that the 7th day Sabbath was not made for mankind to keep it holy but rather it was made to keep mankind holy because when kept properly it will ensure that Jesus becomes and remains Lord of our lives: He will become and remain Lord of our lives because He is Lord of that day.
To fully understand why I say this we must apply what Jesus said in Mark 2:2&28 with what we are told in Hebrews 4:8-10:
4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his. (Emphasis supplied).
In Summary, this tells us that when we walk by faith in Jesus finished work of creation and redemption we will stop depending on our works and live by faith in Jesus’ finished work. When we stop depending on our works and live by faith in Jesus’ finished work we will apply the 3 principles of faith given by Jesus in Matthew 6:24-34 which are:
- Take no thought for your life.
- Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
- God will add all things to us.
Next week we are going to look at the 4th commandment and show how it is really a commandment to walk by faith in Jesus’ finished work of creation and redemption 24/7. You do not want to miss it.
