God-Size Success Part 1

Very few people experience God-Size success. Not because God doesn’t want them to but because the vast majority of people (including Christians) do not understand and follow God’s blueprint (detail plan) for success. In this series I will deal with the details of God’s plan for success because without this knowledge we will always fall short of the success that God has for us.

The first thing we need to know in order to experience God-size success is how to define it. Notice what we are told in III John 1:2:

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.  (Emphasis supplied).

This tells us that God-Size success is holistic because it covers the 3 major areas of life. The first area that is mentioned is material or financial prosperity (the word, prosper, means to do well in business affairs). The second area that is mentioned is health or physical prosperity. The third area that is mentioned is soul or spiritual prosperity.

It is also important to notice the order of importance of the 3 areas of God-Size success. The most important area is the one that is mentioned last, without it the other 2 cannot be fully realized: Thus the phrase, even as thy soul prospereth. Notice what we are told in I Corinthians 2:9-14:

2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  2:10 But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.  2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.  2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.  2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned. (Emphasis supplied).

The first thing this text tells us is that God-Size success is beyond our wildest dreams (v.9). It cannot be grasped by our natural mind. It is so big that if we knew the entire plan we would think it was foolish (v.14). Therefore, in order to cooperate with God’s plan for our success we must surrender to the control of His Spirit daily so He can reveal it to us because spiritual things are spiritually discerned (v.10, 13 &14).

In other words, if we do not surrender our will to Jesus daily we will never reach God-Size success because the natural mind sees success in one dimension only: The material or monetary prosperity. Therefore, we will sacrifice our health and our spiritual well-being in the pursuit of money. Many Christians measure success in this manner: Thus the popularity of the prosperity gospel.

Suffice it to say that this narrow view of success will never satisfy the true desires of our hearts because monetary prosperity, though 1 of the 3 areas of success, is the least important of the 3.  What good is money if we do not have health of body and what good is health of body if we do not have health of soul? This is why Jesus said:

8:34   And when he had called the people [unto him] with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  8:35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.  8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  8:37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?   Mark 8:34-37 (Emphasis supplied).

This is also why we are told in I Timothy 6:10&11:

6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. (Emphasis supplied).

In summary, if our understanding of success is based on monetary gain we will never attain the level of success that God has for us and our hearts truly desire. If we are ever going to experience God-Size success we must do what Jesus said and seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, then God will add all we truly desire to us.

Next week I am going to deal with the mindset that we must have in order to experience God-Size success. Until then I leave you with this portion of scripture to ponder and pray over:

6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon…  6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  6:32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof. Matthew 6:23 & 31-34 (Emphasis supplied).
