1:25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 1:26 [Even] the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 1:27 To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 1:29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. Colossians 1:25-29 (Emphasis supplied).
This text tells us that our work is to preach the gospel and that the ultimate goal of that preaching is to teach everyone how to be perfect in Jesus (v.28). It also tells us how we are to accomplish this holy work in verse 29:
Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
In other words, the only way to effectively preach the gospel into all the world is to live and work by the power of Jesus working in us both to will and to do God’s holy will. This is why verse 27 says:
1:27 To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
The 4th commandment was given by God to insure that the saints would live by no other power than the power of God and do no other work than the work of God. Jesus gave the reason we must live this way when He said:
6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. John 6:27-29 (Emphasis supplied).
Jesus tells us here that the key to working the works of God (plural); is to do the work of God (singular) and that work is to believe that Jesus is our only hope of glory. Therefore, we are to do one work 24/7and that work is the work of faith (v.27). So when we read the 4th commandment in Exodus 20:8-11 and we come to the 9th verse that says, Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work, that work is not for the purpose of receiving the meat that perishes (money): That work is done to receive the meat that endures unto everlasting life, which only Jesus can give (v.27).
There is nothing that Satan fears more than God’s people rightly understanding and keeping the 4th commandment because he knows that the power that will result from keeping it properly will enable God’s people to manifest the character of Jesus and do even greater works than Jesus did when He walked the earth in the flesh (see John 14:11 & 12): We will do greater works because we will live and work by the power of Jesus living us and working through us mightily to not only perfect His character in our lives but to also teach others how to do the same (see Colossians 1:25 -29). This is how the everlasting gospel shall be preached throughout the world and this is why we are told:
Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12 (Emphasis supplied).
Satan does not mind us trying to keep the commandments as long as we do not have the faith of Jesus. Satan knows that without the faith of Jesus we do not have the power to truly keep the commandments which requires supreme love to God and unconditional love to our fellowman, even if he/she is our enemy (see Matthew 22:35-40 & Matthew 5:43-48). Therefore, Satan has corrupted the 4th commandment with the principle that corrupts all truth:
Man can save himself by his own works.
Satan did this by getting us to believe and teach that we can work for mammon 6 days and be holy as long as we stop that work and worship God 1 day. This is the lie that Satan has used to deceive the whole world and get even God’s people to worship and serve mammon more than they worship and serve God (see Matthew 6:24-34).
Next week we are going to see how the present truth gospel for this generation is specifically tailored to expose the lie of Satan by doing two things:
- Give a correct understanding of the 4th commandment.
- Call us out of the confusion that has prevailed concerning how to keep it.
Until then I leave you with this powerful truth that expresses the essence of the gospel and the 4th commandment:
2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 (Emphasis supplied).
