The number 666 has been the subject of much discussion and debate both in and outside of religious circles because of what we are told in Revelation 13:17 & 18 which says:
13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six. Emphasis supplied.
This tells us that there will be a time when no one will be able to depend on their money because you will not be able to buy (spend money) or sell (receive money) unless you have received the mark, the name or the number of the name of the beast (v.17). Verse 18 goes on to tell us that the number of the name of the beast is 666. As a result, the number 666 has become infamous. Hardly anyone in the United States (or the world for that matter) has not been made to fear that number. The books, articles and papers that have written about the number 666 and the mark of the beast cannot be counted. The question is how can we tell which one is telling the truth?
As always, God has provided a key in the text that unlocks the truth concerning the number 666 and that key is in verse 18 which starts by saying, Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: Immediately following that statement comes the key which says:
for it is the number of a man.
In my next blog we are going to use this key to start unlocking the truth concerning the mark of the beast, who will receive it and why. Until then I leave you with this text of scripture to ponder and pray over:
2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and [by] our gathering together unto him, 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
