Present Truth Part 39

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.  Matthew 6:24

In Matthew 6:24 Jesus gives a principle or law that all of His followers must live by in order to worship God in spirit and in truth and that principle or law is this:

You cannot serve two masters: Your either serve one or the other 24/7.

Jesus even tells us who the two masters are: God, the creator and sustainer of the Universe and mammon, the false god/idol that mankind has created.

The next principle or law that Jesus gives that all his followers must live by in order to worship God in spirit can be found in Matthew 6:31-34 which reads as follows:

6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  6:32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Emphasis supplied).

This tells us that those who worship and serve God 24/7 must only focus on entering His kingdom of grace by seeking His righteousness.  In other words, the next principle that Jesus gives is this:

Those who worship and serve God 24/7 will only do the work that reproduces the righteousness of God in their lives because any other work results in worshiping mammon which is sin.

When we understand and accept these two principles then we can fully understand and keep the 4th commandment. I say this because the 4th command is based on these two principles. It commands us to serve God 24/7 by only doing the work that reproduces the righteousness/holiness of God. Therefore it starts by saying in Exodus 20:8:

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

This is a command to remember to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and not get caught up in working for mammon (money): It is a command to remember that we cannot serve God and mammon, you either serve one or the other 24/7: It is a command to remember to trust and depend on God to supply all of your needs and not mammon (money): It is a command to stop doing our work so we can enter God’s rest.

It is only after this command is given that we are told in Exodus 20:9:

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: (Emphasis supplied).

This is not a command to serve mammon for 6 days as the overwhelming majority of Christians believe because it defies the principle Jesus himself gave in Matthew 6:24 which says that you cannot serve God and mammon, you either serve one or the other 24/7.

To ensure that we don’t come to an erroneous conclusion about the work we should be doing during the 6 days of labor we are given a weekly reminder of how to keep the Sabbath holy in Exodus 20:10 which reads as follows:

But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates: (Emphasis supplied).

It is important to note that the 7th Day Sabbath is not the rest but rather a sign and constant reminder that we are to keep the rest. It is also a command to enter God’s rest by not doing any work. In other words, it is a command to take the first step every day so we can say:

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 (Emphasis supplied).

The 11th verse concludes the 4th commandment by giving us the reason for the rest. It reads:

For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Emphasis supplied).

Satan hates the 7th Day Sabbath because he knows that when God’s people keep it the way God intended when He created it at the end of creation week (see Genesis 1:31 & Genesis 2:1-3) they will be beyond his control: They will be beyond his control because they will only do the work of righteousness: The work that will not only reproduce the righteousness of God in their lives but will also cause them to enter into God’s rest because God will work in them both to will and to do of His good pleasure (see Philippians 2:12&13). This is why Isaiah 32:17 reads as follows:

And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. (Emphasis supplied).

This is the work that God’s people are commanded to do in the 4th commandment and when we do it 24/7 we will enter God’s rest and be sealed by God.

Next week I will revisit Revelation 14:6 – 14 to show that the key to understanding the Present Truth gospel for this generation is in understanding and keeping the 4th commandment as God intended when He created the 7th Day Sabbath. Until then I leave you with this portion of scripture to once again ponder and pray over:

4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.  4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.  4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his.  4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Hebrews 4:8-11 (Emphasis supplied).
